Experience

In August of 2020, I decided it was time to start my own company.

Though I have just started Sirius Canine Training, LLC, I have been training dogs since 2005.

After completing an apprenticeship under a Master Trainer  ─ which included passing a veterinary assistant course through Craven Community College in New Bern, NC, the NC Dept. of Labor designated me as a Journeyman Dog Trainer in 2008.

In January of 2020 the American Kennel Club approved me as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator.

Sirius Canine Training, LLC ─ Or, What's In A Name?

The brightest star in the night sky is Sirius. (No, the brightest star is not Polaris ─ also known as the North Star ─ though it is the brightest star in the Northern Hemisphere.)  Sirius, also known as the Dog Star, is located in the Southern Hemisphere in the constellation Canis Major.

Training Style

My training style is based upon a branch of psychology known as operant conditioning.   Operant conditioning encourages desired behavior with reinforcement, and discourages undesirable  behavior with "punishment". (I prefer to use the term correction, since I not only let the dog know it is doing something wrong, I also show it the correct response or behavior that I am looking for.)  Put another way, it associates a voluntary action ─ be it good or bad  ─  with a consequence .  As Master Dog Trainer Drake Parker of Top Dog Academy in Greenville, NC is wont to say, "Never deny a dog the consequences of its actions."

Note: I personally do not like the use of shock collars, except in situations where the dog's life may be in danger — e.g., the dog has an unhealthy fascination with snakes.
